GRSBM
Starting in my junior year of High School I started to explore different colleges and non-accredited Bible Schools. There was even a couple of Bible Schools that I had considered and requested information packets on in Canada. Both of them were very legalistic and conservative. BUT my biggest concern was going to school in Canada in 1968, which was the time of Vietnam. There were many young men heading for Canada to get out of the draft and avoid Vietnam and I did not want people to think that is why I choose to go to school in Canada.
When I talked to my mom about Bible Colleges, she suggested that I attend the same school that our pastor's daughter was going to attend - The Grand Rapids School of Bible and Music in Grand Rapids, Michigan. It just so happened that the school was having a weekend event to help us get to know the school and decide if this is the school for us. So Pastor Logan, his wife and daughter Darlene and my self headed out to Grand Rapids for this event. The event was an automatic hit and blessing. One of the highlights was a song time lead by Bob Parks. He lead us in such spiritual and uplifting songs like "I'm In Love With the Garbage Man's Daughter, her slimy hands in mine!" and "Do your ears Hang Low, do they wobble to and fro, can you tie them in a knot and can you tie them in a bow?
I signed up for the school, to start in the Fall of 1968 and I was accepted. I can remember talking with my aunt about the school and the fact that it was only a 3 year school. She thought that I should attend a college that was fully accredited and at least 7 years long, especially for being a "preacher". She may have a good point as I look back on the education I obtained at GRSBM.
So, in the Fall of 1968 I was off to attend GRSBM. I was soon to learn that Bible School was more than learning about the Bible and how to be a preacher of the Word of God. It was also about relationships. I was more interested in dating than actually learning. I must have dated 5 - 6 girls during those 3 years. Linda says she can name them all. I am not sure that I can anymore. For chapel time they seated us in alphabetical order, Distad sat next to Curey (as in Linda Curey). The rest is history!!! We were married on June 5th, 1971, 2 weeks after school was over. That was 51 years ago!!!
STAY TUNED!!!
Linda's memories : Unlike Frank I had never visited the school in Grand Rapids. I heard their choir once at my home church and God lead me to attend there. Many people asked why would you go there ? What would you be able to do or get a job after graduating ? Little did they and I know where it would lead me. Frank and I sat next to each other in all of our classes .because Curey (my maiden name ) was just before Distad.. We talked a lot and became friends and by the end of our second year ( It was a 3 year college) we were engaged.I thank God for the life long friends I made, the Bible training I received , being able to sing with a Gospel team and of course my greatest adventure marrying Frank !
